He has commanded the messenger to kneel down by the bed, and has whispered the message to him; so much store did he lay on it that he ordered the messenger to whisper it back into his ear again. Then by a nod of the head he has confirmed that it is right. Yes, before the assembled spectators of his death—all the obstructing walls have been broken down, and on the spacious and loftily-mounting staircases stand in a ring the great princes of the Empire—before all these he has delivered his message. The messenger immediately sets out on his journey; a powerful, an indefatigable man; now pushing with his right arm, now with his left, he cleaves a way for himself through the throng; if he encounters resistance he points to his breast, where the symbol of the sun glitters; the way, too, is made easier for him than it would be for any other man. But the multitudes are so vast; their numbers have no end. If he could reach the open fields how fast he would fly, and soon doubtless you would hear the welcome hammering of his fists on your door. But instead how vainly does he wear out his strength; still he is only making his way through the chambers of the innermost palace; never will he get to the end of them; and if he succeeded in that, nothing would be gained; he must fight his way next down the stair; and if he succeeded in that, nothing would be gained, the courts would still have to be crossed; and after the courts the second outer palace; and once more stairs and courts; and once more another palace, and so on for thousands of years; and if at last he should burst through the outermost gate—but never, never can that happen—the imperial capital would lie before him, the center of the world, crammed to bursting with it own sediment. It's one of two projects my production company, Skinny Pictures (facebook, twitter), is working on at the moment (the other being Damien Magee's Angelpiss), both of which are scheduled to be completed by mid november. Can't say a lot about it without giving too much away, but I'm calling it a platonic love story set in Sydney. I cut together a little teaser for my fantastic cast and crew to have a sneaky peek at... thought I'd share it with you fine folks. The beloved Palace Academy Twin held it’s last screening ever (Oscar winner The Secret In Their Eyes), and closed its doors after over three decades of presenting quality art house and foreign films to a hungry Sydney audience. Yes, Sunday was a grim day in many respects, but amongst the sad farewells and the void left by the Academy Twin… a glimmer of hope.

Sunday wasn’t just the end of an era, it was also the beginning of a new one. Give local film geeks some credit! Did you think we’d take this lying down? Of course not! In the weeks leading up to the 27th a movement arose in the twittersphere; SFF patrons loving the festival so much, they wanted it to continue – all year round. On the 27th I was one of a group of tweeps, who took to the Palace Academy Twin to say goodbye to the cinema and to actively ignite a new tradition. Ladies and gentlemen we present The 12 Step Film Club – a movement to support the Sydney film addict community… in 12 easy steps!

Read the full blogpost on the official site.

Sydney Film Festival: Cutting Edge Filmmaking & Catfish - 2010 SFF wrap up..

You know you've watched a powerful film when a man at the urinal in the toilets afterwards asks everyone what they thought of the homages to Hitchcock. Or when you feel elated, or moved, or physically ill as the credits roll. If you've lined up outside on the street on a rainy winter’s day to get into the theatre and you can walk out of it thinking it was all worth it; feeling excited about it; you know you've seen something special on the screen.

For all these experiences and more, I’ve got to give up a resounding hollaah to Clare Stewart and her fantastic festival team. Tickets to the event, which will be held at the State Theatre, are still available! Transported from London to the ex-PM’s stylish windswept island retreat (the architecture of the principal locale is pure Hitchcock, as is the film overall), the ghost begins to unravel a complex web of intrigue that is far more sinister than he anticipated. When the ex-PM is accused of war crimes, his sharp, intelligent wife (Olivia Williams) intervenes in the ensuing media frenzy.

The breezy, frequently witty script (with extra-textual reference to both the Blairs and Polanski himself) is brilliantly accentuated by Alexandre Desplat’s evocative score and Pawel Edelman’s cool, polished cinematography.

'Polanski’s best film in years.' – Daily Mirror.

'A slow-burning and elegant thriller.' – EfilmCritic.com.

Sydney Film Festival: Creative Drive..

What is it about the word ‘documentary’ that brings a frown to the lips and a furrow to the brow? Is it the residual trauma of having to sit through videos about puberty or the periodic table in our school days? Well, if sunny afternoons of your youth, spent in a darkened classroom, are enough to turn any of you off the art of the documentary, this year’s SFF Creative Drive program boasts a selection of docos that are guaranteed to turn the most ardent of naysayers back on. Some of the best documentarians in the world bring us stories of the artists who have and who continue to shape the world in which we live. Let's just say you haven't made a movie since “Monster-In-Law”(2005), because - and I know I'm going out on a limb here - I don't think anyone ever knew "Bordertown"('06) or "El cantante"('06) existed. Could “The Backup Plan” be your triumphant return to the screen? ...

The film opens begin with a cartoon woman strutting around New York city, looking for a baby daddy. She’s wearing gold hoops and flaunting a large booty – so we know it’s you, J-Lo! Cut to you lying down with you’re legs open, being artificially inseminated - good for you! Women can do it on their own! But then, uh-oh, your sassy, yet deliberately less attractive friend with a million children and a “saggy vagina” tells you it ‘aint easy having kids. Way to tell you after your insemination! … Get rid of her! No, really, she keeps cropping up during the film, trying to be dry and witty and comes off really annoying. It’s not attractive, J-Lo. You’re better than that.

Now, enter romantic male lead, played by Australia’s own Alex O’Loughlin. Although when I say ‘romantic’ I mean ‘profoundly unlikable – not to mention creepy’. So, Alex stalks you for a while, finds out where you work and live… oh and did I mention he’s a cheese maker? The hits just keep coming! So anyway, you find out you’re preggers – blahblah – Alex finds out – blahblah – drama – blahblah – humour at the expense of lesbians – blahblah, oh you know what happens. My point, J-Lo, is that I’m underwhelmed. Yes; Alex O’Loughlin is pretty attractive – espesh when he’s half naked, oiled up and ploughing the fields (METAPHOR!!!), but he’s still a freak. And he got angry at you and threw out that really important pillow that you loved. And he spilt wine all over your dress! And he’s a cheese farmer!! WHO wrote this movie?!

Look, I’m on your side here. I want what’s best for you. Remember “Out of Sight”(1998) with George Clooney? That got 2 Oscar noms. You were sexy and feisty and the movie was entertaining and didn’t make me want to perform a lynching on every cast member. Make that movie again! Or just head in that direction. I love you (and your booty). But I did not love “The Back-up Plan”.

xoxo Tris

fashion designers directing: yay or nay?

In Karl Lagerfeld's first cinematic venture, Paris Shanghai: A Fantasy, the Chanel designer brings to the screen a very strange story of Coco Chanel, a woman who appears to be Queen Elizabeth II, and several euro-cum-asian folk. It's about the trip she "only made in her dreams" - perhaps the "dream" aspect explains why the film doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Apart from being beautifully visually designed, the editing is awkward and clunky and the interaction between the actors is like something from a school play. A note to Lagerfeld: just because someone is pretty, doesn't mean they can act. Or maybe the problem is a complete lack of script, which would explain a lot too. I genuinely don't know what Lagerfeld hoped to achieve by making this and I must say I don't really know what to make of it.

Fashion designers directing: Yay or Nay?

Top 5 Must-Sees of the Sydney Film Festival 2010..

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; Surely when your grandmother takes you in things will start looking up… This is what we hope for when seventeen-year-old Josh (James Frecheville) is taken in by Smurf (Jackie Weaver) in director David Michôd’s first feature, Animal Kingdom.

There are plenty of sighs and groans when people hear that the film depicts the story of a notorious criminal family in underworld Melbourne. We’ve seen it before! Indeed, but not like this. Michôd brings a freshness to the dramatic premise which went on to win him the Jury prize at Sundance. It’s an affecting, moving drama and if that’s what you look for in a film then you’ll be more than happy with Animal Kingdom.

Newcomer James Frenchville is solid and dependable as protagonist Josh, who must fight to keep his head above the water at Smurf’s house where his criminal uncles Darren (Luke Ford), Pope (Ben Mendelsohn) and Baz (Joel Edgerton) also reside. Senior cop, Nathan Leckie (Guy Pearce) may be determined to lure Josh into the police fold, but essentially it’s Josh’s decision and this “will he, won’t he” is what drives the narritive.

Mendelsohn and Edgerton give standout performances here, although all are strong. Weaver’s Smurf is perfectly overripe; sweet on the outside, but perhaps rotten at the core. There is no glorification of crime here. Nor of the force of the law. Michôd lays everything on the table and leaves the viewer to make the moral judgements. A few moments of ill-fitting melodrama somewhat taint an otherwise cool depiction of a suburban tragedy, however, for the most part, Michôd respects his audience.

If you’re looking for cutting edge, innovative cinema you may come away from Animal Kingdom a little disappointed. That’s not the appeal here. A solid script, delicate balance of mood and pacing and some great performances are the drawcards. With Animal Kingdom Michôd brings us authenticity, truth and thrilling suspense. The heart races and the palms sweat; I genuinely wanted to wack Mendelsohn's Pope over the head at one point. This is affecting Australian cinema and it's great to see in our cinemas.

REVIEW (albeit extremely brief): Irma Vep..

Irma Vep
directed by Olivier Assayas - 1996

***1/2 - Highly Recommended

I think I love Assayas. His short for Paris Je T'Aime starring the always-delightful Maggie Gyllenhaal as a displaced American actress in Paris was so perfect. Irma Vep, starring a different Maggie (Cheung) - who also plays a displaced actress (this time herself) is just as enjoyable. His unconventional directing techniques make for something very fresh here - although I'm sure there will be some who hate it... In any case this film, which conveys Assayas' point of view on the french film scene at the time, is thought-provoking, entertaining, visually dynamic and hypnotising. Below is one of the more experimental sequences of the film (and the film within the film!). It might not be to everyone's taste, though, so... rent it. It's worth a least a few bob, even from haters.

REVIEW: Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky..

Coco Chanel & Igor Stavinsky
directed by Jan Kounen - 2010

*** - Recommended

A riot at the Theatre Des Champs-Elysées. It’s 1913 and after the controversial premier of his bold new work “The Rite of Spring” Igor Stravinsky is inconsolable. Coco Chanel, however, was mesmerised by the polarising performance, and by it’s composer…

Depicting a truly moving story of love and sacrifice between two cultural icons of the 20th century in just under 2 hours is certainly no mean feat. Fortunately, Dutch born Director Jan Kounen brings style, intelligence and grace to just such a project with his latest offering, “Coco Chanel and Igor Stravinsky”.

Great lengths have been taken to ensure historical accuracy in the film, and it shows. Meticulous attention to detail down to exact choreography and costuming for the beautifully shot and edited performance of ‘The Rite’ makes for a stunning opening 20 minutes. One wonders how Kounen managed to secure a recording of the piece by the prestigious Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, who are notorious for refusing to allow inclusion of their performances on film soundtracks. Perhaps they were persuaded by the promise of authenticity and attention to detail that Kounen demonstrated in recruiting Chanel designer, Karl Lagerfeld as a creative consultant and occasional costume designer. No matter how you look at it, the film is truly stylish and photographed beautifully.

Perhaps “Coco & Igor”’s weakest element is its plot; its dramatic structure. The comparison between Stravinsky’s compositions and the creation of Chanel’s fragrance, Chanel No.5, is questionable. Surely the artistry in selecting a pre-prepared scent from a lineup cannot be compared with that of composing of a musical masterpiece. While the Chanel No.5 subplot does demonstrate the perfectionism and all-encompassing vision of Coco Chanel, it raises questions of dramatic relevance.

Elegant and chic, with the voice of a life long smoker and a slender build, Anna Mouglalis completely inhabits the character of Coco Chanel. At times tough as nails; at others, tender and vulnerable, her nuanced performance is a true standout. Mads Mikkelsen’s portrayal of contemplative genius Stravinsky is perhaps more subdued than the somewhat flamboyant real-life composer, however it works here. He is the perfect dramatic counterpoint to Mouglalis’ Chanel. Elena Morozova, as Stravinsky’s wife, brings soul and dramatic strength to the film largely due to a lean screenplay and Kounen’s refreshing direction; he gives the actors space and time to… act!

Kounen’s film does occasionally fall back on convention. It is not a masterpiece. But it’s honest, intimate, well researched and beautifully shot by cinematographer David Ungaro. “Coco Chanel and Igor Stravinsky” is an affecting story of love and sacrifice, without the melodramatic hollywood bullsh*t were’re all used to.

REVIEW: Shutter Island..

Shutter Island
directed by Martin Scorsese - 2010

*** - Recommended

Adapted from the Dennis Lehane novel, master director Martin Scorsese’s “Shutter Island” draws us into a grim and powerful psychological thriller, which just seems to fall short of it’s lofty ambitions. With a strong opening underscored by music from contemporary classical composer and conductor John Adams, we are introduced to U.S. Marshal Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his partner, Chuck (Mark Ruffalo), who have been sent to the mysterious Shutter Island to investigate the disappearance of a murderess from a hospital for the criminally insane. Bleak, foreboding imagery and a powerfully ominous arrival sequence early in the piece reek with Stanley Kubrick: “The Shining”-esc operandi. This works entirely, however as the film progresses, Scorsese never quite seems to break free of it. In any case, a tragedy in the most greek sense of the word is foregrounded and we are hooked.

At the heart of the film DiCaprio is fine as the tough, yet sympathetic Marshal in dogged pursuit of truth in a place where everybody seems to be hiding something, however while DiCaprio works well, perhaps he lacks the hard edge and grit required to really make the character sing. No matter, though; strong performances from Ruffalo, Michelle Williams and notably Patricia Clarkson, rounded off by a dexterous Ben Kingsley make for compelling viewing, as does the beautiful avant-garde music of Boris Berman and Nam-June-Paik during lyrical Lynchian flashback and dream sequences. These are outstanding, guaranteed to stay with the viewer for days, perhaps weeks after viewing. Scorsese has skilfully created a sense of dissonance perfect for exploring this psychological material, however one can’t help but feel somewhat short changed by a few moments of poorly finished green screen and untidy edits.

Working from Lehan’s novel seems to have proved a challenge for Scorsese. The book lags towards the middle, and Scorsese’s film is forced to do the same, occasionally leaving us waiting for the next set piece. Eventually, when the big third act revelation of the film finally comes, one can’t help but feel slightly disappointed. Though in a case in which story is dictated by source material it seems unfair to blame Scorsese for this. Indeed he works hard to create the best film possible from Lehane’s novel and the result is definitely worth a first and perhaps a second viewing.

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px;
